Baja Peninsular, Mexico November  - December, 2003

We left San Diego on November 14th and headed for Tortugla Bay (Turtle Bay) about halfway down the Baja Pennisular (400 miles). We had a good sail with light winds and choppy seas.  We arrived in Turtle Bay on November 17th.

We met up with  a number of  boats that we have been travelling with down the coast. Quite a few of these boats had left San Diego ahead of us and it was good to see the motley crew again.

We spent a few days of well earned rest at Turtle Bay. Explored the village,  had a few beers on the beach, Peter went on a Hike and Joyce went cycling into the nether lands.

We then headed out to sea again for the trip to Bahia Santa Maria.

After a 2 day sail we arrived (November 26th) at Santa Maria. We explored the mangroves, Peter fished for halibut and we both hiked into the sand dunes beside the mangroves. What a beautiful sight the dunes were, and  while we there we had a spectacular view through the eastern rim  of Santa Maria to Magdalena Bay our next destination about a 4 hour sail away.

Bahia Magdalena "Mag" Bay is a huge enclosed body of water which is almost as large as San Francisco Bay but doesn't have the development that San Francisco has.

We anchored in Man o War Cove a village with about 330 people. about 4 miles west was a larger community called Puerto San Carlos which has about 2,000 people living there.

We stayed in Puerto Magdalena in Man o War Cove.  Joyce took a Pango trip to San Carlos with the Port Captain to do some grocery shopping. We both can't get over the fact that in our lives now our dinghy is our car!

We took a few days to explore the southern portion of Mag Bay where there is a community called Puerto Alcatraz and Puerto Cortez. Whilst sailing we passed through a huge flock of cormorants.  The flight pass lasted over a half hour period.  Awesome!  We estimated quite a few thousand birds must have passed us. Quite a sight!

We left Mag Bay on December 6th for La Paz.  The trip took 3 days via Cabo San Lucas and Los Frailes.  We are now anchored in the Town of La Paz and will stay there until the beginning of January.  Then we will sail up the Sea of Cortez to explore the Islands after which we will make the crossing to the Mainland.

All is well.
