Sea of Cortez     December 2003 - March 2004

We spent a month in  La Paz over Christmas and New Year. How time flies when you are having fun!  The time just slipped by though towards the end Peter was getting rather itchy feet.

We spent our time in  La Paz anchored out at Le Mogote Island which is a 3./4 mile dinghy ride to the dinghy dock at Marina de La Paz.  A very wet ride when the northerlies are blowing 20 knots. against a 2 knot tidal current which kicks up quite a chop.  Full foal weather gear for the trip even though the sun is shinning. Oh the joys of yachting  ( Peter insists the faster you go in the dinghy the drier the ride - if you believe that you -------)

La Paz itself is a great place to hang out for cruisers. compact and friendly, good cheap food, beer @ 90 c (Can)  a bottle - good cinemas @ $3.00  for the early even ing showing.  All provisions within walking distance of the dinghy dock.

We did some boat projects while we were there including minor repairs to the gear on the legs from San Diego.  The To Do list never gets any shorter!

A stark reminder to cruisers to never take any "safe" anchorages as safe were the damaged docks, floats, and boats we passed on the daily dinghy ride. Even masts sticking out of the water all thanks to the hurricane last August that La Paz experienced.  Dreams disappeared and time spent on repairing yachts taking months.

In La Paz we met up with other cruisers we hadn't seen for a while.  The ability to make friends while cruising is very easy when you have the same outlook on life and quite often the same destinations.  When you meet up again its great to swap stories of where, what you have been doing, anything interesting you have seen, and anchorages that are unbelievable etc.

After La Paz we cruised the Islands north of La Paz for about 3 weeks.

An easy first day was Puerto Ballandra a couple of hours out of La Paz, we stayed one night.  We continued up through Isla Spiritus Santos and anchored in Caleta Partida for about 4 days enjoying the peace and pleasures of a great anchorage with clear turquoise waters with great snorkeling, hiking an d beachcombing.

Partida Anchorage

After Partida we headed up to San Evaristo, Puertos Los Gatos and Aqua Verde.  In Aqua Verde we stayed for about 4 days before the start of our journey back to La Paz.

Five days were spent  in Isla San Francisco on our return trip  which was warm, sunny and looked very tropical.

We returned to La Paz to make a few small repairs to our boat, collect our new modem which we need to receive e-mail on board. Having e-mail will be such a luxury, no more having to wait to send e-mails.

We  returned back up the Sea of Cortez on February 7th and anchored at Aqua Verde to meet our friends Robin and Judy for a few days .

We left Puerto Escondido on February 20 to make our way to Puerto Vallarta and visited the Bird Colony of Isla Isabella.  We spent a few amazing days there, it just seemed like the poor mans Galapados Islands

We have been in Puerto Vallarta for the last month preparing for our  crossing to the Marquesas Islands. There are about 40 boats preparing for this crossing and a few have already left.  We should be departing about the 25th March. The passage should take about 25 days to reach the Marquesas Islands
