Queen Charlotte Islands July 2003

Queen Charlotte City is a very friendly place.and  we really enjoyed our two days exploring and catching up with laundry, shopping and showers etc.

We set off to explore Haida Gwaii (Queen Charlotte) Islands.  Our aim was to cruise down the east coast and visit the Haida watchman's sites.  Windy Bay, Gandle K'in (Hotspring Island) and Sgan Gwaay were the sites we visited.  Windy Bay was magical we hiked to  see the 1,000 year old spruce.  Hot Springs was soothing and restful as we re,laxed in the hot springs. Sgan Gwaii was our favourite spot because of the famous Mortuary Poles in the ancient Haida village. We had a guided tour with a detailed  history of the Mortuary Poles that are 150 to 200 years old.

Rose Harbour is a delightful little anchorage.  We spent an afternoon at Susan's place walking through her vegetable  garden that has been reclaimed from the forest. Susan provides dinners for  kayakers and sailors.

After spending a wonderful two weeks in the  Charlottes we left from Looscoune Inlet early  on July 23rd under blue skies and light winds, heading for Vancouver Island..
