Madagascar

After a two day passage from Mayotte we arrived on the west coast of Madagascar.  We found a quiet anchorage in which to hang out and enjoy the scenery. After a few days started our coast hop down to Cape St. Andre.

We saw lemurs found only in Madagascar and parts of Comoros island (they were taken there by traders in the early 1900's) found them  fascinating. They are found in groups of 5- 25 and we saw a group of 5 in one area. These broad nosed gentle lemurs are very rare and are an endangered species.

As we watched quietly they jumped from tree to tree and were very curious about us and kept staring.  Took lots of photographs and felt really good that we had the privilege of seeing them in their natural habitat. Also close by there were the Boabab Tree which is also quite famous. Found out from a local that the pods from the tree give the world Cream of Tartar that we use in cooking.

On the way down to Cape St. Andre we met a pod of whales frollicking around in the water about 5 miles from the shore.  They were jumping out of the water and splashing with their fins having great time.  Unfortunately we didn't get many photos as we were more interested in watching. We watched them  for about 40 minutes before we had to get going again to reach the anchorage before dark.

Our trip down the coast only lasted about 10 days before we set off for the Mozambique coast and our destination of Richards Bay in South Africa.
